How a Pressure Switch Works

This part plays a critical role as your furnace prepares to heat your home.

Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:

  • Your furnace’s control board begins running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and pulls in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
  • When the pressure switch senses that enough air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
  • Your furnace ignites and supplies heat.

What Happens When a Pressure Switch Malfunctions

When your pressure switch isn’t working correctly, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a few times before the furnace shuts down completely. When a part isn’t working right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.

Your furnace will let you know something is amiss with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.

You may see quick flashes or an alternating slow flash as it communicates a fault code.
