Home Comfort Trends for 2017

February 08, 2017

Picture it: you are packing up your things at the office and miles away at your home, the stove powers on to make dinner. The air conditioning system is notified and lowers the temperature to deliver more cool air to offset the oven’s additional heat. When you come home the lights automatically turn on as you enter, dinner is made, and your home is at the ideal temperature.

That’s the ideal experience! And also the type of advanced home interconnectivity that is obtainable now and 2017 could be a crucial year for advancements in how your home’s heating and cooling systems function as part of the team.

“Smart phones transformed our lives in part because they enabled numerous apps to make our lives simpler and richer,” said Rob Haines, Marketing Manager for Service Experts Heating & Air Conditioning. “We predict that in 2017, developers will be focusing on more new apps that let all of your home’s systems and appliances interact instead of being siloed, and this will create breakout new advancements in how your home’s heating and cooling systems work.”

Smart thermostats and new advanced HVAC systems can already send notifications to you about energy utilization and regular maintenance such as filter changes. Future systems could even be able to identify a likely equipment failure before it occurs and alert your heating and air conditioning repair company to contact you and schedule a technician’s visit. The technician will arrive with advance knowledge about the malfunction and the needed parts to repair it.

Another on-the-drawing-board vision is the use of infrared heat sensing in the home that will decifer which rooms are in use by people in the home and actually guide heating and cooling specifically to those areas.

“Zoned HVAC systems have been one of the fastest growing parts of the heating and cooling industry for many years, and that will remain a big opportunity,” said Haines. “Furthermore, systems will concentrate on heating and cooling specific rooms or groups of rooms as needed to enhance comfort and energy efficiency.”

And yes, Haines adds, the millennials help drive the trends for at-home connectivity and more efficient heating and air conditioning systems. “As millennials invest in their homes, they expect their home systems like heating and cooling to not only do what they are told, but to monitor and adapt themselves and to proactively send notifications to the homeowner. We also see that the millennials and Generation X are much more conscience about energy efficiency and those implications of their heating and air conditioning systems.”
