Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to those in the construction trade who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the organization honors numerous recipients with a grant and in 2016 the Joseph Groh Foundation was happy to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, earned his MBA from the University of Chicago and 13 years ago acquired ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and earned his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil endured a massive stroke at only 48 years old. He lost the use of his left arm and the experience left his left leg severely impaired, causing foot drop. Only able to walk with a heavy brace, his muscles began to deteriorate and his doctors worried that he would ultimately end up permanently in a wheelchair.

Because the stroke left him unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their lone source of income, putting financial tension on the couple with three children in college and one in elementary school. They became optimistic when Adil was told about the WalkAid System, a piece of equipment that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone in Adil’s situation walk again. Unfortunately, Adil and Laila could not afford the equipment in addition to the extensive rehab that would be required so he could understand how to use it.

Fortunately, an employee at WalkAid directed the couple to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil was able to get the WalkAid System and has already experienced wonderful success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
