The Ban on R22 Refrigerant
R-22 Refrigerant Phasing Out
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that R-22 refrigerant (also known as the brand FREON®), a common refrigerant for residential heat pumps and air conditioning systems, is not environmentally-friendly. The EPA is regulating the production and use of refrigerants and in the future all air conditioning and heat pump refrigerants that contain chlorine will be eliminated.
What does this mean for you?
If you own a heating and air conditioning system that currently uses R-22 refrigerant, you don’t need to panic or run out to purchase a new system. Production of R-22 refrigerant is winding down, and while the costs will increase, production will continue until 2020. After that time recycled refrigerants should be accessible for a while.
Because of this change, Levy & Son in Dallas offers R410A, a more environmentally friendly option for refrigerants which lowers the impact on the ozone layer.
